Psychosocial Peak Body
About the PPB
The Psychosocial Peak Body (PPB) supports Queenslanders experiencing psychosocial challenges by providing an information and advisory service to find out about local services, delivering training to promote inclusion, and advocating directly to government on issues impacting people, their carers, and kin, focused on non-clinical supports and systemic reform.
Funded by the Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety (DFSDCS), PPB meets quarterly with the current Disability Minister, department officials and other Disability Peak representative bodies to collaborate on projects and submissions. These Peaks advocate collectively to influence and inform government decision-making.
The PPB now operates under the MHLEPQ umbrella, meaning we are supported and connected with their broader lived experience leadership and resources. The PPB’s work is intersectional and collaborative, supporting Queenslanders with disabling psychosocial experiences.
What is a Psychosocial Disability?
Psychosocial Disability is a term used commonly by the NDIS, providing the following definition: a psychosocial disability is a disability that may arise from a mental health issue.
Not everyone who has a mental health condition will have a psychosocial disability, but for people who do, it can be severe, longstanding and impact their recovery. People with a disability as a result of their mental health condition may qualify for the NDIS.
The PPB would like to acknowledge that, unlike some types of disability, mental health challenges can be episodic in nature and ongoing recovery and improvement is possible. Recovery and wellbeing should always be a priority when receiving or providing support.
What We Do
What the PPB does do
- Provide information and referral services – online and phone support to locate services and resources.
- Education and training to influence community attitudes and remove barriers to inclusion.
- Expert feedback and advice to government on the NDIS and other matters impacting Queenslanders who are experiencing psychosocial challenges.
What the PBB doesn't do
- Don’t provide crisis support.
- Don’t help you directly with your NDIS application.
- Don’t provide direct mental health services or support to you.
- Don’t provide individual advocacy.
