MHLEPQ Position Statement: Establishment of a New National Consumer Peak

The MHLEPQ has developed a draft position statement on the establishment of a new National Consumer Peak.  We welcome the establishment of a new peak but also highlight that the National Mental Health Consumer Alliance (NMHCA) already includes state peaks from the six states and the ACT with a combined membership of close to 8000 members.

We highlight the importance of co-design and that such design should consider the differences between Consumer and Carer movements in Australia. We request that a new National Peak should not replicate or compete with existing state and territory peaks but that we structurally should be set up for collaboration and combined strength.

Consumer-centred perspectives will recognise that a consumer is one and the same person whether they access a state delivered or commonwealth funded service and that advocacy across State and Commonwealth should be unified.

You can access the Draft Position Statement here.
